We listen through history
A neutral question can sound controlling if past interactions have made control a sensitive issue. A delayed reply can feel rejecting if distance has repeatedly preceded conflict. A request for space can sound like abandonment to one person and like the only way to prevent escalation to another.
The reaction makes more sense when the history underneath it is visible.
The reaction becomes the next message
Once one person reacts to the message they heard, the other person reacts to that reaction. A small misunderstanding can quickly become a familiar cycle: criticism, defensiveness, withdrawal, pursuit, silence, resentment, repair, then the same conflict again.

Translate the reaction
A useful question is: What is this reaction trying to communicate that the current sentence is failing to say?
- Surface:"You never listen."
- Possible underlying message:"I do not feel that what matters to me is landing with you."
- A more workable sentence:"I want to finish this thought before we decide what to do."
